Crops in India are categorized into two types: Rabi crops and Kharif crops.
Some crops are grown in the Winter season, called the rabi crops. It lasts from November to April. Wheat, gram, peas, mustard, coriander, linseed are rabi crops.
Some other crops which are grown in the rainy season are called kharif crops. It lasts from June to October. Paddy, pea, maize, cotton, etc., are kharif crops.
My region which lies in gangetic basin is very famous for growing only rabi crops. Kharif crops are rarely grown as it is always on threat of flood caused by the River Ganga.
When the crops season for Rabi Crops starts in the month of November, it brings a real togetherness in the family. The male members are busy in planning which crop should be sown in which plot of land. They always cosider crop rotation, type of soil, etc. Female members of the family are just busy in cleaning the seeds to be sown in the field and other works.
My grandfather always sends my uncle to call Pandit jee for a good day to start first sowing of the seeds. Muhurt has been decided by Pandit jee. The other thing which is most interesting, I would like to tell you. Pandit jee also discloses the name of the person/children who will first sow the seeds into the field on the basis of Panchang Study. Generally it is a child from the family. I had the chance to sowing the seeds first many years.
On the first day of crop season, all the children and male members with farm helpers go to the farm or the selected plot. Many rituals are performed; tractor ploughs the field, the child who has been selected for sowing the seeds first, takes some seed and throws into the field. It is done five times. Fertilizers are also thrown likewise. The elders of the family also do the same. It is like a pooja in the field. Gangajal is poured into the field. Every member present there, prays for good harvest. Then the farm helpers do the rest work. They sow the seeds into the whole field. After completing all these works, food is served to all present there. Female members of the family cook the best food for this occasion. Puri, sabji, dahi, kheer, sweets, etc., are served as food. Every year this brings the real togetherness in the family.
